| Watching the Street (Ottawa) |
(Oct 2010)
|
| Vague Terrain selected Watching the Street (Navigator) for their showcase in this year's Electric Fields festival. With some help from the people at Artengine I made a new, localized version of the piece, with 24 hours of Ottawan streetscape to explore. |
| Measuring Cup |
(May 2010)
|
| A dataform that represents 150 years of Sydney climate data in the form of a small vessel. |
| commonsExplorer |
(Mar 2010)
|
| commonsExplorer is an experimental interactive browser for the Flickr Commons. It provides a "big picture" view of these collections - a rich, single screen interface that reveals structures and patterns and encourages exploration. |
| Weather Bracelet |
(Sep 2009)
|
| 365 days of Canberra weather data, in a 3d-printed wearable form. |
| M Digital Design / Grow your Own Logotype |
(Apr 2009)
|
| A generative branding toy for the new Master of Digital Design launching at UC this year. |
| Watching the Street (Navigator) |
(Mar 2009)
|
| A pleasure to contribute to Vague Terrain 13: citySCENE. I created a browsable version of the Watching the Street dataset. |
| Limits to Growth |
(Oct 2008)
|
| A generative experiment creating utopian diagrams of self-limiting growth. I'll be showing prints at the upcoming Dorkbot CBR show (CCAS Manuka, in November). Made with Processing. More will accumulate here. |
| Watching the Street |
(Oct 2008)
|
| An adaptation of the Watching the Sky process, focusing on pattern and change in an urban environment. Installed / exhibited at the Dorkbot CBR group show. |
| JCSMR Curls |
(Jul 2008)
(Updated:Jan 2009) |
| A generative design project for the Jackie Chan Science Centre at the John Curtin School of Medical Research. |
| Watching the Sky |
(Sep 2007)
|
| An ongoing experiment in environmental imaging and data revisualisation. This project uses the camera to gather data from the environment. When slices of this data are recombined, spatial and temporal patterns in the environment become apparent. Rather than sample a single, isolated variable, as in most scientific data gathering, the camera gathers a data slice that can cut across multiple domains - natural and cultural, local and global, random and meaningful. The aim of the project is to gather long term datasets that will extend into weeks, months and beyond. The question of time scale, and especially the perception and interpretation of changes in the environment over long time scales, is central.

| Us is Them |
(Dec 2006)
|
| A generative work in progress, exploring difference and differentiation. Presented in December 2006 at UnAustralia. |
| boom |
(May 2006)
|
| Three generative image processes, made with Processing. More info on the site itself. |
| field mosaic |
(Mar 2005)
|
| A development of my extremely crude audio mosaicing work, begun in 2004 with newsField. This system uses a live input signal, and analyses it based on number of zero crossings. This information is used to trigger a segment from a pool of pre-analysed samples. I developed this system for a gig at the Foreshore Space, Canberra, in March 2005. In that performance I used a live mic input, but the sound sources were the same domestic field recordings used in newsField. |
| mbiraBrain |
(Jun 2004)
|
| A sonification of the Listening to the Mind Listening dataset, which uses samples from a mbira (thumb piano). It was played in glorious 16.2 surround sound at Sonic Connections 04, University of Wollongong, September 2004. |
| NewsField |
(Mar 2004)
|
| A performance/process combining a live radio news broadcast and field recordings made near my home. The radio signal is crudely analysed for pitch and amplitude to select, slice and manipulate the field recordings. Coded in Max/MSP. Performed in March 2004 at VISIONIC, a gig organised by Somaya Langley and Alistair Riddell at the ANU Arts Centre. |
| invalidObject | else |
(Jul 2001)
|
| This was the first project by folder, an investigation of real-time audio folding processes, using Max/MSP. else is part of Fällt's invalidObject series, now available in mp3 form here. Philip Sherburne called invalidObject "a remarkable document of a vibrant artistic community and a critical moment in the evolution of digital music" (here). Ron Schepper had some nice things to say about else more recently, in stylus magazine. |
| Empyrean Sound Design |
(Jun 2001)
(Updated:Oct 2001) |
| I designed the sound for Melinda Rackham's beautiful VRML world Empyrean. It won the sound-space Award for Virtual Worlds, at the Stuttgart Filmwinter festival 2001. In October 2001 when Empyrean went multi-user, I added sounds for the avatars. |
| step trance |
(May 2001)
|
| A real-time process by folder - originally available as a downloadable application (Mac OS9 only). Maybe soon there will be a new version for OSX? |
| autonomousAudio |
(Oct 2000)
|
| I curated autonomousAudio, a collection of electronic audio works by Australian and international artists using complex generative processes - including a-life. Works by Oren Ambarchi & Martin Ng, Gordon Monro, Ignacio Platas, Alistair Riddell, Christopher Willits and zy'z x. Part of dlux media arts' futureScreen00 event, hard|soft|wet: Artificial Life. |
