Melbourne bound (22 Jun 2007)
I'm heading to Melbourne for second semester, on study leave. I'll be working with the good folks at CEMA, at Monash University, writing about, making and researching generative, audiovisual and data art. And most likely drinking some very good coffee.
Data Art at DAC (1 Jun 2007)
I'll be heading to DAC 2007 in September, presenting a paper titled "Art Against Information: Case Studies in Data Practice."
DEAF07 (5 Mar 2007)
I've been invited to present at a seminar at DEAF07, coming up in Rotterdam in April. The festival is titled "Interact or Die!" and I'll be speaking at a seminar on April 12th titled "Not Everything is Interactive." I'll be talking about interaction in, and with, a-life and generative art.
Andy Gracie: Symbiotic Circuits (1 Feb 2007)
Last year I was commissioned by arts collective Pylon to write an essay on the work of British artist Andy Gracie - Gracie works with hybrid and symbiotic systems. The essay has just been published on Pylon's relaunched site.
Aminima (24 Aug 2006)
Issue 17 of Spanish new media art magazine Aminima includes images from, and words about, my generative work boom.
Text is the new Text: Writing Workshop @ Electrofringe (9 Aug 2006)
Gail Priest and I will be running a workshop on writing about new media, at this year's Electrofringe. Come along and bring your writing... here's the blurb:

Even in a "new media" environment, text remains the basic medium for creative and cultural communication, and a key tool for artists, critics, administrators, and academics. This workshop will offer an active exploration of the practice of new media writing across a range of contexts and forms: academic and not, artists' statements, reviews print, online and blogs. Issues will include technological literacy, "artspeak", getting published and finding audiences. Along with presentations by the facilitators, participants are invited to bring a sample of their writing (about new media) for discussion.
a Blog of one's Own (17 Jul 2006)
I've decided to start a blog on generative art, data aesthetics, and whatever else takes my fancy. It won't be a high-traffic, newsy blog, but a more occasional and hopefully more considered sort of thing. The first post is on Driessens and Verstappen's E-Volver project. Anyhow, read on: the teeming void
Metacreation in Paperback (3 Mar 2006)
Metacreation has just come out in paperback. Slimmer, neater, and way less expensive.
Keynote at ACMC 06 - Medi(t)ations (8 Feb 2006)
I will be giving a keynote presentation at the Australasian Computer Music Conference this July, in Adelaide. The conference theme is Medi(t)ations: computers, music and intermedia. The other keynote is from klipp av (Frederik Olofsson and Nick Collins).
Third Iteration (9 Nov 2005)
I'll be presenting a paper at the upcoming Third Iteration conference in Melbourne. The paper proposes a critical approach to generative art, and also proposes a critical role for generative art. Casey Reas, Machiko Kusahara and Peter Bentley will also be there. And I'll be opening the exhibition (called Metacreation!), curated by Paul Brown, and participating in the "Default Option" panel.
New Constellations: Art, Science and Society (17 Oct 2005)
I'm chairing a session at this conference, to be held at the Sydney MCA in March 06. The keynotes include Ruzena Bajcsy, Elizabeth Grosz and Steve Kurtz, and papers will be published in Leonardo. The call for papers is now open - see the MCA site for details.
README 100 (23 Aug 2005)
I've had a proposal for an article accepted for README 100, a German festival of software art. I'll be writing a critique of abstract generative art which tries to move beyond the duality (which Florian Cramer first identified) of formalist vs. culturalist approaches to software art. Don't think I'll be going to Germany alas, but look out for the paper.
Generative Arts Practice (25 Jul 2005)
I've been enlisted for the international programme committee for Generative Arts Practice 05, a conference coming up at UTS in December.
Sussex Interactive Mind Workshop (1 Jul 2005)
I've been invited to present at a workshop in Brighton on "The Interactive Mind and Art(efacts)." This workshop is the third in a series on The Interactive Mind, convened by British philosopher Mike Wheeler. I'll be speaking on a-life art's "dynamic artefacts" and their connections to the interactive mind.
A-life Art on Empyre (26 Oct 2004)
In November I will be a guest contributor on the Empyre list, convening a discussion on a-life art. I'll be joined by some of the artists featured in Metacreation: Ken Rinaldo, Mauro Annunziato, Paul Brown and Maria Verstappen.
Sonic Connections 2004 (10 Sep 2004)
Presented at Sonic Connections 2004, held at the School of Creative Arts, at the University of Wollongong. Mbirabrain (see Projects) was played in a 16.2 channel dome-shaped array, constructed by David Worrall (Avatar) and Guillame Pothard from UOW. I also presented a short version of "Hearing Pure Data" (see Writing).
Creativity & Cognition 05 (6 Jul 2004)
I'm on the international programme committee for Creativity & Cognition 05, reviewing submissions on the theme of "Retrospectives in Creative Practice and Research." The conference will be in London, in April 05... don't think I'll be there, alas.
